Carrie Bradley Discography

The Great Auk

The Great Auk is a "semi"-unplugged duo uniting two longtime beloved singer-songwriters from the San Francisco Bay Area, Carrie Bradley and Bernie Jungle.

An East Cost native, Bradley co-founded legendary the alt-folk band Ed's Redeeming Qualities, followed by fronting literary-pop-rocker 100 Watt Smile. She has been the on-call violin player for the Breeders since 1988 to the present, and has recorded with many other artists, including Jonathan Richman, Love and Rockets, Red House Painters, and Tanya Donnelly.

Jungle's reputation for a virtuosic and unique guitar style springs from the combination of his mastery of heavy metal motifs (acquired during his obsessive teen years, spent in Pittsburgh) and a sensitive, original ear that finds the missing chord or minimalist thread in any song, across genres. He has contributed power and texture and a mesmerizing stage presence to a number of West and East Coast bands, including Granfaloon Bus, the Lipsey Mountain Spring Band, and Thunderbleed.

In the Great Auk, Bradley and Jungle trade off and mingle their two soft-edged voices in songs focused on emotional stories that emerge slowly and building a world of dense imagery, all run through with a dark sense of humor and a love of language. Instrumentation runs from a single acoustic guitar--both songwriters are passionate about the power of empty space in a composition--to distorted electric guitar and violin overdriven trough a loop pedal to Fisher Price toys and theremin; but perhaps the most signature sound of the Great Auk are Bradley and Jungle's tightly, telepathically wedded vocal harmonies.

Ed's Redeeming Qualities

Ed's Redeeming Qualities was an alt-folk group founded in 1988 and originally consisted of Dan Leone, Dom Leone, Carrie Bradley (who also performed with The Breeders), and Neno Perrotta. Jonah Winter joined the band for the albums Big Grapefruit Cleanup Job and At The Fish And Game Club. Dom Leone died of cancer in 1989.

Ed's songs were usually funny and strange stories and character sketches. Some highlights include Neno's "Lawyers and Truckers" and "Lawn Dart", and Leone's "Spoken Word."

The band received some mainstream exposure when The Breeders covered their song "Drivin' On 9" on the album Last Splash. Ed's Redeeming Qualities also contributed several songs to the soundtrack for the movie Ed's Next Move (in which they also briefly appeared).

The Presidents of the United States of America borrowed the lyrics and title of the Ed's song "More Bad Times," adding a few new quips and a different feel.

While the band has officially broken up, they occasionally get together for shows every few years or so. In 2011 they played a reunion show at TT the Bear's Place in Cambridge, MA, and recreated the atmosphere of Ed's Basement variety shows that occurred at The Rathskeller in the late 1980s.[

After the band's breakup, Carrie Bradley went on to form the band 100 Watt Smile, which released two albums in the late 1990s.

100 Watt Smile

100 Watt Smile was an eclectic grunge-styled band with country influences that was founded in 1994 by Carrie and drummer Michael Hart. The lineup expanded to include Matt Stahl on guitar and Brad Pedinoff on bass, who were later replaced by Scotts Greiner and Houston on guitar and bass.

The band provided a vehicle for the quirky songwriting that Bradley was known for during her days with Ed's Redeeming Qualities, with her quiet, breathy vocals and signature violin work juxtaposed against heavy electric guitar and bass and driving percussion.

And Reason Flew begins with an updated version of Bradley's haunting song New Jersey, which first appeared on the Ed's Redeeming Qualities album Big Grapefruit Cleanup Job. The band followed up with a second, eponymous album in 2001.
